刁鑽語詞：台鐵區間車，「Local」

台鐵區間車，車種(train type)名為"Local"。來看看這字眼ㄦ譯得是如何，適也不是。

可看出第3義相對的詞是Express，專指交通工具如公車、火車等。如此台鐵應用"local"也沒什麼不好是吧。Local一詞是指「一地區」的，而這地區範圍並不算大，主要是一個特定的區域(第2義)。問題仍然在：這區域是比較大還是比較小？套用在台鐵區間車的「區間」，究竟適也不是？

我的直覺建議用regional，字典說：
REGIONAL adj.
1 - affecting a particular region: localized
2 - of, relating to, characteristic of, or serving a region: regional high school;
3 - marked by regionalism: regional art;

好像沒解釋到什麼。或許REGION有更明朗的指示：

從例子"The bird ..."中，region不過是this帶出的一個名詞而已。其他各個例子亦如是，填補方位需要一個文法名詞。結果看來是local字典有給了明確的答案，寫local至少沒有大錯。

就一個詞ㄦ罷了，能有什麼大錯。
拿實例來看，鐵路運輸舉幾個好找的例子：

Transport express régional (abbr. TER, by SNCF)或TER 法國省際列車，當然，它營運的範圍比台灣要廣大，但是功能性是類似的。

Amtrak的資訊還摸不清楚，就算了。

儘管這兩個例子裡這些Regional行車服務並不盡然如台鐵的區間車各站皆停，但以台灣鐵道人文的特性而言，台灣島南北不過四百多公里，以區間車苗栗開到七堵來講，約末一百公里吧。這一段鐵路沿線區間所串聯的通勤人口，一來符合local的意思，二來在實例裡卻習慣講regional。還可以再組織一層偏向採用regional的理由：local侷限於一隅，一個城鎮、一個附近的範圍；對區間車行經的生活圈而言，可能有中學生活圈（例如竹中、竹女等）、大學生活圈（例如中原大學）、綜合商業金融通勤圈（台北車站和台北捷運車站）…不一而足。每一個人文生活圈所各自涵蓋的地理區域，就是local的典型意思。以鐵道一段「沿線串聯」的概念而言，卻是regional較為貼切。即使各站皆停，區間車的南來北往正是在整個台灣客運鐵道系統的一隅，region。以此而論，譯作Regional是較為貼切、為外人所容易理解的。
